Kellogg in 1831 and this was probably where he built his Union Hall. The hotel at the south-west corner of Main and Younge Streets occupied an area which for many years constituted village lot 42. One regards this corner with curiosity and respect for it is known that in 1831 at the Union Hall kept by S. Kellogg Brighton first got its name. • Note*: 2 April 1831; Simeon Kellogg's Hotel, Main St., Brighton, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "The first early settlement was in the west end of the present village at or around the corner of Main and Railroad Streets. Later THE CORNERS came into existence and was a settlement at or around the intersection of Main and Young Streets. Its name was later changed to Singleton's Corners. This settlement comprised at first about half a dozen houses but in time equalled and surpassed the settlement in the west end. There was naturally some rivalry between the two settlements. Many suggestions were made for a name which would embrace both settlements but none was agreed upon until 1831. Reverend Joseph Lockwood, Brighton's first postmaster, who held the job for fifty years gave the village its present name. He was born at Stemwhich England in 1786. His three sons were Milton K. Lockwood the second collector of customs, Thomas C. Lockwood the second postmaster and Joseph E. Lockwood. The Reverend Lockwood named the village after Brighton, England. The exact date of Brighton's birth is April 2, 1831. It was announced in the COBOURG STAR and the NEWCASTLE GENERAL ADVERTISER: "Pursuant to notice, a meeting of the inhabitants of Cramahe and Murray was held at Union Hall, kept by Mr. S. Kellogg, on the 2nd April, 1831, for the purpose of naming the village now in progress at that place. Among the great variety of names proposed, it was decided by a committee chosen for the purpose that the village should be called, and in future be known,::by the name of Brighton".   Mark Kellogg was born in Brighton, Ontario, Canada, one of 10 children of Simeon Kellogg and Lorenda Whelpley Kellogg. Mark grew up in Waukegan, IL, where his father operated the Exchange Hotel. In 1858, he was an operator for the Northwestern Telegraph Co. Married Martha L. Robinson, 19 May 1861 in LaCrosse, WI. Two daughters: Cora Sue (born 5 Feb 1862) and Martha Grace (born 20 Aug 1863). Wife died on 17 May 1867, LaCrosse, WI. In 1873, Mark became a reporter for The Bismarck Tribune (North Dakota). He was the only reporter who accompanied Custer to the Little Big Horn Battle in 1876, and was killed on the flat near the river below Last Stand Hill, just before the Indian village. His body is believed buried in the mass grave at the battle monument. Mark's notes were found on the battlefield, and have been published in several books.

  Original Burial Site. Kellogg was the only journalist killed at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Kellogg had moved to LaCrosse , WI in 1851. He became the town's telegrapher. In 1867, Kellogg unsuccessfully ran for city clerk. After his defeat, Kellogg moved to Brainerd, MI. He was hired as a telegrapher for for the NPRR. While employed with the railroad, Kellogg began his career as a journalist. He wrote columns for the St Paul Pioneer Press. In 1872, Kellogg ran for the state legislature and narrowly lost. In May of 1873, Kellogg relocated to Bismarck, MT, and he became a reporter for the Bismarck Tribune. The winter of 1875, found Kellogg working as a clerk for a lumber mill in Aitkin MI. In March of 1876, Kellogg was one of the passengers on the same train with LTC George Armstrong Custer that had become trapped in deep snow drifts. On the third day, Kellogg found a pocket telegraph key set. Tapping into the telegraph lines next to the stranded train, Kellogg was able to notify train authorities of their predicament. Kellogg, as a reporter for the Bismarck Tribune and the New York Herald, received approval from General Alfred Terry to accompany an expedition against the Lakota and Cheyenne that was going to depart on May 14, 1876, from Ft Lincoln, Dakota Territory. After joining the expedition, Kellogg was thrown from a horse. This incident revealed that he was no horseman. From then on he rode a slow moving mule. When LTC Custer and his men marched to the Valley of the Little Big Horn, Kellogg was the only reporter to accompany the column. Just before the Battle of the Little Big Horn, Custer divided his command in preparation of attacking a reported village. Kellogg remained with Custer. Sometime during the Battle of the Little Big Horn, Kellogg was killed. On June 29, 1876, Kellogg's body was one of the last to be found and one of the last to be buried. He was buried, where he had been found. In the years following the battle, there has been speculation as to exactly where Kellogg's body was found and buried. Some accounts have him on or near Last Stand Hill. Other reports have him near the Little Big Horn River between Last Stand Hill and the Deep Ravine. There has been one consistent detail regarding where Kellogg had been found. That his remains were found near the body of Regimental Chief Trumpeter Henry Voss. The New York Herald, in 1891, paid to have a marker placed on the battlefield (The location of the marker is not where Kellogg was buried). In 1881, all known battlefield burials, except officers, were placed in a mass grave on Last Stand Hill. Kellogg's wife, Martha Robinson Kellogg, had died in either 1867 or 1868. She was buried at the Oak Grove Cemetery in LaCrosse MI. He was survived by his two daughters, Cora Sue and Martha Grace. Bacheller, former postmaster, back from celebration of the forty-fifth anniversary of the battle near Bismark. Incidentally, Mr. Bacheller relates how the family of one of the daring newspaper men, who went to his death with Custer, was cared for by his employer, James Gordon Bennett, for many years.
  Mark Kellogg, representing the Bismark Tribune and the New York Herald, went with Gen. Custer when he left to meet the Indians near the Rosebud reservation." Said Mr. Bacheller at the anniversary event. "The last words that Kellogg wired his employer, James Gordon Bennett, were "We leave the Rosebud tomorrow and by the time this reaches you we will have met and fought the red devils, with what result remains to be seen. I go with Custer and will be at the death."
  The bones of Mark Kellogg lie under the sod with those of others who were massacred by the red devils. Kellogg is recalled by old residents of La Crosse as a telegraph operator in the old Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph company's office, which stood at Front and Main streets in the '60's. His father kept the Kellogg house, which was located where the Hotel Beumont now stands. This hotel burned down in 1857. Kellogg was sent with the Custer expedition by James Gordon Bennett, of the New York Herald, and represented the Bismarck Tribune on the side.
  "He left two children, who were taken care of by a relative, Miss Lillie Robinson, who lived in a large frame house at the corner of Fifth and Main streets, where Hoeschler's drug store now stands. James Gordon Bennett sent her $50 a month for each child to maintain and educate them and when they became of age gave the $5,000 each to start them off in life.
  "The telegraph report of the battle sent from Bismarck to the war department and also to the Associated Press was sent by another La Cross man, John Carnahan, who also was formerly an Atlantic and Pacific operator in this city, and who now is at Missoula, Mont.
  "I had a talk with Fred Server, who was an orderly sergeant under Gen. Terry and who helped to bury the body of Custer and the body of a civilian whom he did not know. He said they were all scalped except Custer and the civilian. It is said that Rain-in-the-Face cut out the heart of tom Custer and ate part of it. Rain-in-the-Face himself says he did it.
