- Note*: 30 October 1888; Belleville, Hastings Co., Ontario; "Visitors from Trenton. The Yacht "Surprise" came down from Trenton today with the following party on board: - Capt. Cuthbert, J.R. Cumming, A. Forbes and Messrs. Tisdale and McKinnon." from the Belleville Intelligencer, Oct 30 1888, item sent to me by Amanda Hill, Archivist, Hastings County Archives, Apr 3 2023.
Note: I wonder if the name J.R. Cumming might actually be Cunningham, the name that was the informant for Alexander Forbes' death registerion in 1916.??? (Dan Buchanan, Apr 3 2023) - Note: 16 August 1889; The Murray Canal, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "The Grand Opening of the Murray Canal took place on August 16, 1889. In 1939, the Belleville Intelligencer printed a first-hand account of that event under their "Looking Backward" banner, providing some interesting news from fifty years before: "Through the courtesy of Mr. H. Corby, M. P., many citizens, including Mayor W. Jeffers Diamond and the members of the city council, Mr. Thomas Ritchie, President of the Board of Trade, Col. Strong, American consul here, and many other prominent citizens, joined a number of the prominent citizens of Trenton yesterday in formally opening the Murray Canal. Arriving at the canal three boats loaded with people; (with the Trenton Band playing on one of the boats) steamed through the canal as far as Brighton Wharf where a stop was made and where lay at the wharf the yacht Surprise, Commodore Forbes in command, which was the first boat to pass through the canal. Later the excursionists proceeded to Presqu'ile, which in the near future will become famous as a summer resort. At present there are many campers there. It was with regret that the party sailed for home. We noticed the following prominent persons present from a distance and from Trenton: Hon. Mackenzie Bowell, Minister of Customs; Mr. Cochrane, M.P.; Mr. H. Corby, M.P.; Mr. G. W. Ostrom, M.P.P.; Mr. D: Gilmour and Mayor Morrison of Trenton. Although there were four members of Parliament present in the party, no speeches were made."

Note: Alexander Forbes is at the bottom of a long list of "L" lodgers. Does not say establishment, probably a hotel. Doctors and ministers there too.6 - Note: circa 1900; Trenton, Hastings Co., Ontario; "To add to Amanda's findings, and confirm that Commodore would have applied to his position in the local yacht club, I see W.C. Mikel's History of Belleville, in a section on the local yachting activity a listing, under second class yachts, " "Surprise" built by the late Alexander Cuthbert owned for a time by Belleville people and later by Alex Forbes at Trenton, about the same size as above." There is no year given for the entry...I also see Alex Forbes was a barrister located in Trenton." per email from Richard Hughes, Apr 4 2023.10

- Note*: circa 1889; Belleville, Hastings Co., Ontario; "To add to Amanda's findings, and confirm that Commodore would have applied to his position in the local yacht club, I see W.C.
- Note: 16 August 1889; Murray Twp., The Murray Canal, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Through the courtesy of Mr. H.
