Fotheringham died at his home, 20 Wellseley St.., Sunday night in his 80th year. Recognized for his outstanding gifts as a teacher, Dr. Fotheringham served on the faculty of Trinity medical school, and later the University of Toronto. He was He was on the staffs of the Toronto General Hospital and the Hospital for Sick Children. He won many honors during his distinguished military career and had been with the medical corps since its inception in 1900. Born in Kirkton, Dr. Fotheringham attended St. Mary's collegiate and University college, Toronto. For a time he was classics master at Upper Canada College. He graduated from Trinity Medical colleg and the University of Toronto. At the outbreak of the last war he was appointed assitant director of medical services for Military District No. 2 and served overseas with the Second Canadian Division. In 1917 he was recalled from France to reorganize army medical services and was made director-general of military medical services for Canada. Dr. Fotheringham was first incumbent of the chair established in 1924 by the University of Toronto in history of medicine. He was also created a Knight of Grace, the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. He is survived by two daughters, Miss Helen, at home, and Mrs. Ruth Kilpartick, and one son, Donald T. Fotheringham. His wife predeceased hm." from The Toronto Daily Star, Monday, May 20, 1940

  • Note*: circa 1930; On July 13, 2005 I stopped at the Information Booth at Grenfell and was directed to the Town Office where I obtained information about the local Cemetery and Fotheringham memorials there. After taking pictures at the cemetery, I visited Summerberry, a ways back west on the highway, which turns out to be very small group of buldings that represented a village long past it's prime. The old school was boarded up and several homes are empty and falling down; a few may be lived it today. Later I went back west on the highway and stopped at the Info Booth at Wosleley and there I met Jim and Kathleen Clarke. He is related to the Jolly family and know right way who I was talking about when I mentioned James and Penelope (Jolly) Fotheringham. John producced a book on Jolly family history and I copied down some details from the page where this one family is listed. It is an extensive book with lots of pre-immigration information from Scotland.
