"(1914 is written at top) PETERBROUGH IN MORNING TO-DAY FOR LATE SENATOR; From a Staff Correspondent. Peterboro, Ont., Jan. 16. General regret was expressed here to-day on receipt of news of the death of Senator Cox. In every office and on the street could be heard the inquiry "Did you hear of the death of Senator Cox?" This with many of the stories related as to the work of the late Senator Indicated the esteem in which he was held by those who were closely acquainted with his work in the city. Senator Cox started in Peterboro in a very humble way. Many storied are told of his early life and his first-business ventures. He was from the first a man of dominant personality. Was a Messenger Boy. It has been said that at one time peddled pins. He was certainly "Chore" or messenger boy at one time in this city, and afterwards became a telegraph operator and from that worked his way to the forefront the business world and became a great power in the district. Many of the older citizens have personal recollections of the late Senator and all express their regret upon his passing, but there is feeling that his work was completed and that all the business concerns with which he was connected were so well managed that his death will not effect any change in their management.
Was Prominent Methodist. Magistrate Dumble spoke in highest terms of the late Senator. He remarked that he was always closely sociated with the membership of the Methodist Church and a loyal and liberal supporter of that body. "As a citizen," said Mr. Dumble, "he was always progressive and incessant in his efforts to advance the Interests of this city. He was ambitious but always accomplished his purpose by honorable methods and was prudent to excess. He thought out his plans with great care and being satisfied as to the course, pursued it with great tenacity, and he rarely if ever made a mistake.
Overhauled Midland Hallway. "When he began buying property, it was contract city property and productive and always enabled him to meet his liabilities. When the Midland Hallway was under mismanagement, and It was necessary to have a thorough business man at it s head, Mr. Cox was appointed President. He took up the active management and gave assiduous labor to the work, put up his own credit, obtained money, improved the railway and settled all the debts of the company. How He Won Fortune. He purchased large quantities of railway bonds and so improved and increased the business that bonds which had been bought at twelve and one half cents on the dollar rose to par and this was the foundation of his fortune. From that day to this he has gained and occupied a high position in financial concerns. He had an extraordinary grasp of finance, he Insisted upon first-class bookkeeping and audits. For the last two years he has been arranging all his business matters, so that they are now under the ablest management." Brough Manufacturers to City. Mr. T. O. Bradburn spoke of Senator Cox as a public-spirited man who has spent his best days in the upbuilding of the town. He was ever on the lookout for manufacturers who me encouraged to locate in the district. Many other friends of the late Senator expressed themselves in similar terms. Among whom were Mr. W.G. Morrow, ex-Mayor Bradburn, Mr. Kendry, Mr. Collins, Mr. A.E. Peek M.P.P., and Mr. R. J. Winch." from pg. 018 of Newspaper Clippings, a collection donated by Shawnee Spencer to the Brighton Digital Archives, 2022.

- Residence: 1888; Toronto, York Co., Ontario; "Cox moved to Toronto in 1888, probably because of the convenience of handling his business network from the province’s main commercial centre, and possibly also because Scott Act supporters were distinctly unpopular in Peterborough." - Note: 1898; Toronto, York Co., Ontario; "The Cox companies formed an identifiable financial family, with intimately interlocking boards, routine and significant inter-firm transactions, and heavy reliance on a managerial/directorial group related to Cox by ties of blood, marriage, religion, or old home town. The network included two fire-insurance companies of which Cox was president, British America Assurance and Western Assurance, and it
continued to expand with the founding of Imperial Life Assurance in 1897, National Trust in 1898, and Dominion Securities, a bond-trading company, in 1901. A number of the young men who got their start in Cox companies, such as William Thomas White*, Edward Rogers Wood*, James Henry Gundy*, and Edward Robert Peacock*, went on to outstanding careers in politics and finance. In 1898 Cox also briefly held a controlling interest in Manufacturers’ Life and the Temperance and General Life Assurance Company." - Note: circa 1900; Sherbourne Street Methodist Church, Toronto, York Co., Ontario; "In Toronto Cox was a pillar of Sherbourne Street Methodist Church, which became known as the “Millionaires’ Church” because of the prominence of wealthy businessmen such as Cox, Ames, Harris Henry Fudger, Albert Edward Kemp*, and Joseph Wesley Flavelle*, an occasional Cox protégé who had also emigrated from Peterborough. For many years Cox was president of the Ontario Ladies’ College in Whitby,
Ont., and bursar of Victoria College, the Methodist component of the University of Toronto. He continued to be an active temperance worker, and was a generous supporter of church organizations, the Toronto General Hospital, and other worthy causes." (Michael Bliss, "COX, GEORGE ALBERTUS," in Dictionary of Canadian Biography, vol. 14, University of Toronto/Université Laval, 2003-, accessed December 13, 2022, http://www.biographi.ca/en/bio/cox_george_albertus_14E.html)10 - Note: 1900; Toronto, York Co., Ontario; "During the early 1890s Cox moved to gain effective control of Canada Life. He accumulated all the shares he could and forced his way onto its board in 1892, at the cost of considerable resentment by other shareholders and directors. In 1899 Cox, who owned or controlled close to a 50 per cent interest, was instrumental in persuading the board to move Canada Life’s head office to Toronto, another step in the centralization of commercial and financial power in Ontario’s Queen City. Cox became president and general manager of Canada Life in 1900. As president of
the Bank of Commerce and the Central Canada Savings and Loan in that year, he was the man at the centre of one of the country’s most important financial networks, controlling the placement of more than $70 million in assets."
