  • Burial*: 8 May 1963; Fairview Cemetery, Haldimand Twp., Grafton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Funerals needed to be arranged for the four victims, although nothing was planned for Robert. In another misguided attempt to limit the fretfulness of the preceding days, Margaret and Brian were not offered the option to attend any of the funerals. A last-minute change of heart on Harold's part meant that the children stayed at Harold and Ethel's son's home alone during the funerals. Harold had been so overcome with emotion at the devastating loss of both of his siblings, he felt he could not attend. But at the last moment on May 8, he pulled himself together and left with the other adults. The children were warned not to go outside, so they spent the day wandering through the house, snacking, and worrying about their future.
Even the locations of the family's graves were kept from the children. Why? Concern for the children? Shame? General emotional overload for Harold, for everyone? After about fifty years, the far-flung burial locations were determined for all of the victims, including Gladys, whose body was sent to the Union Cemetery in Smithville, Ontario, near to the site of one of her cabins. Gladys was buried close to Caistor Township, where her family had first settled when she was a small child. Robert was buried in the Grafton Cemetery in an unmarked grave. No one attended his interment. None of the graves had markers, but these have since been laid. Robert's grave has never had a marker." frm page 180 of "The Castleton Massacre: Survivors' Stories of the Killins Femicide" by Sharaon Anne Cook and Margaret Carson, 2022, Dundurn Press.7

But, from this point on, Robert also demonstrated a number of troubling qualities: harsh criticism of some authority figures and undue adulation of others, an unwillingness or inability toexercise self-discipline, and a notable lack of social skills, resulting in isolation." page 31 of "The Castleton Massacre: Survivors' Stories of the Killins Femicide" by Sharaon Anne Cook and Margaret Carson, 2022, Dundurn Press."7
