Platt, McCuaig's Liberal successor, resurrected the issue several times in 1883 and 1885, even though the work was well underway by this time. He claimed that local vessel owners found Weller's Bay a better harbour, and that the government's decision had been dictated by politics. One of his charges maintained that a pair of prominent local Liberals, the McMullen brothers, had purchased land around Weller's Bay in anticipation of the selection of that route, hoping to turn a profit by selling the land back to the government.
