And, to make things even more exciting, CN were actively preparing to demolish the buildings on site to facilitate the sale of the rail-side property. The demolition crews were on site! The old station has been declared a national heritage building by the federal government." Brighton Independent, August 13, 1996, Vol. 10, No. 33 - from front page.
Also, in same article: "Ralph Bangay wants to turn heritage building into a museum. It's probably been one of the worst]kept secrets in town, but Ralph Bangay has made it official. He has purchased one of the most historic buildings in town, and plans on developing the heritage property into a railway museum. For years the old Grand Trunk/CN train station has sat empty, its windows boarded up and brick walls exposed to the work of grafitti artists. CN didnft want the station, and when the rail company offered the building and property to the town last year, council said it wasnft in the real estate business, deciding to take no responsibility for a building thatfs been declared a national heritage site by the
federal government. ... And Ralph added “This town has got every bit of potential to bring in thousands of tourists a year. Where do you find another Grand Trunk station like this?”2

This magnificent locomotive and coal tender, built in Montreal in 1906, had long been a feature in Zwick's Park in Belleville. A decision had been made to sell the old relic and it seemed to be destined for the scrap heap. At 110 tons, that's a lot of scrap!
Once again Ralph came to the rescue. He negotiated its sale and then managed its dismantling, transport and reconstruction with military precision and a small army of enthusiastic volunteers. • Note: 23 August 2015; Memory Junction, Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "In the summer of 2015 there was some vandalism at MJM and when word got out, the strong appreciation folks in this community have for MJM mixed with social media and help came pouring in. An organization was formed called Friends of Memory Junction Museum with Drew McDonald as Chair, seen here with his back to us, and Kerry .. as Secretary, facing us. An event was planned to celebrate Memory Junction Museum and the efforts of Ralph and Eugenia Bangay in creating and nurturing this place. Here we see Ralph supervising preparations for the event. Ralph always has a list!" from presentation of Riding the Rails, Feb 2016.
  • Note: 19 September 2015; Memory Junction, Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Then, in September, there was a Work Weekend where dozens of volunteers came to MJM to do all sorts of jobs, painting, cleaning, cutting weeds, fixing doors – Ralph’s list took a big hit! One of the most important jobs done was the installation of security lights which were installed to deter the vandals. And that has worked very well. After all of this, Ralph and
Eugenia were very happy and MJM looked really good. Of course, maintaining a place like this is an endless job so volunteers are always welcome. Remember, Memory Junction needs boots on the ground as well as loonies in the bucket." from Presentaton Riding the Rails Feb 2016.

  • Note: 11 November 2018; Memory Junction, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Engine 2534 was moved from Memory Junction. It had been sold to someone north of Oshawa who wants to display it. I walked by one day and saw it gone. What a shame! (Dan Buchanan)
John Campbell has an article in the Independent on this, with a good pic of the engine on a flatbed.5
