- Note: 27 February 1998; Toroto Star, Toronto, Ontario; "The Toronto Star - February 27, 1998; Spoil of Havana harbour await new explorers by Derek Baldwin; A Canadian firm plans to recover the bounty of hundreds of Spanish galleons shipwrecked off Cub's coast …
… Ed Burtt, vice-president of operations, will use sonar and imaging equipment to pinpoint 400 sunken ships in Havana's harbour another 100 merchant vessels along the northwest coast and an undetermined number of ships that sank near around the Isle of Youth off the southern shore of the island. Over the next five years, the company will identify and target six of the most financially and historically significant galleons for recovery. The agreement could be renewed for another three years, Lewis said. Burtt Is optimistic the six galleons will yield something impressive given Cuba's crucial role in the Spanish silver route as the primary layover for all treasure-laden galleons enroute to Spain. "We'll be the first people in this area to uncover 500 years of history." he said. "Nations fell because of these ships and the sliver route - the Spanish changed the world forever when they decimated the Inca, Maya and Aztecs to quench their thirst for precious metals and jewels." The Century signs are presented to farms for 100 years or more. Mrs. Whiley's grandfather, James Way, a United Empire Loyalist, bought the farm in 1853, and built the house in 1861. He died in 1905, the farm being taken over by his son Daniel I., Mrs. Whiley's father. Since their marriage in 1936, Mr. and Mrs. Whiley have made their home in the century-old house she grew up in. Mr. Whiley erected the post on November 10, and on Friday, December 23 Allan Herrington and Ronald Ireland put up the sign on behalf of the Junior Farmers." newspaper clipping in collection of Susan Brose, passed to me Oct 2017.
