O. Thomas, proprietor of the Opera House; Charles H. Lewis and R. H. Courney, of the general ticket office of the Little Rock and Memphis Railroad; Chief of Police Frank Botsford and James E. Gibson left this city for Carlisle on a hunting expedition. Shortly after noon to-day information reached Little Rock that Alderman Weller had been accidentally shot and instantly killed. Later information confirmed this report, and the details were as follows: When they had reached a point on the prairie, about five miles from Carlisle, the horses attached to the hack in which they were riding became frightened and made a short turn. In doing so Mr. Courtney was thrown from the vehicle over the hind wheel. His gun stuck the wheel and was discharged. Its entire contents entered the back of Mr. Weller's head, killing him instantly. The deceased has been a resident of Little Rock for the past ten years, coming here and accepting a position as compositor on one of the daily papers of this city. For several years past he has represented the Fourth Ward in the City Council and was a candidate for re-election next Tuesday, and so popular was he with all cleases that he had no opposition. He was about 38 years of age and unmarried. His mother, who lives at Parry Sound, Ont., and his brother, Russell I. • Death*: 23 September 1901; Cedar Rapids, Iowa, U.S.A.; "An Old Resident Dead.; After Long Suffering L. R. Weller; Passed Quietly Away; L. R. Weller, aged 79 years died at the home of his son, W. L. Weller, 852 Fifth Avenue, last evening at 8:30 o'clock after an illness of years. The elderly gentleman had a large circle of acquaintances in Cedar Rapids and vicinity, having lived here for the past thirty-five years and though he has been near death's door for some time the announcement of the end will come as a shock to many. It was not until Friday, however, that fears were entertained for his end, for though he has been an invalid for so long he had prospects for many months of life. The sudden change in the weather brought on pneumonia and this combined with old age was more than the patient's frail constitution could stand. Death came in a peaceful, quiet manner. He closed his eyes in sleep and never awoke to know or more suffering or pain. All yesterday afternoon he slumbered and those about him were given hopes that he would master the attack of pneumonia. In the evening, however, he commenced to sink and at 8:30 pm life had departed. Up to the time of the end his mind was clear and active, but he was deprived of much pleasure, which might have come to him in this lonely hours, by having lost the use of his eyes. His sight was affected some years back, but he did not become blind until about twelve months ago. Besides his many friends there remain to mourn his death his wife, three sons and four daughters. The sons are J. H. Weller of Minneapolis and George A. and W. L. of this city. the daughters are Mrs. F. A. Simmons of Minneapolis, Mrs. J. C. McClelland of Worcester, O., Mrs. G. C.? ?Lenterman? of Cedar Rapids and Miss Kate Weller, who makes her home with her brother W. L. Weller. The funeral will be held Thursday, but because of the fact that all of the friends and relatives have not as yet been heard from the final arrangements have not been completed. Lorenzo R. Weller was born in Clinton, N.Y., January 21, 1822. From there he moved to Canada, where he lived for some time, but thirty-five years ago, he brought his family here and has since been a resident. He was at one time connected with the Cereal mill and also the B. C. R. & N. but for years he has not been in active employment." At present every convenience is afforded for a pleasure trip which will well repay you – Mr. Weller starts a six horse coach every morning for the Rice Lake, with an excellent most careful driver, where it meets the Forester steamboat; this boat is under the command of Mr. Weller, Jr., and his attention to his passengers and punctuality in the delivery of freight are earning him not only favour from the public in the shape of praise, but also, we are glad to hear, in a more substantial form.” From the Cobourg Star, June 18 1845, microfilm, Cobourg Public Library.
