"Birth: May 13, 1799, Vermont, USA; Death: Sep. 21, 1863; Cobourg, Ontario, Canada; Son of David Weller* he and his father came to Prescott, Ontario from St. Lawrence County, New York in the 1820's and established an extensive stagecoach line in the province. In addition to passengers, they obtained contracts to carry the Royal Mail** as well. By the early 1830's, William had moved to Cobourg where he established a repair shop for his business as well as a factory to produce carriages for sale. His father is reported to have died at Cobourg. William served nine times on the Police Board, which operated the town prior to its incorporation; and was the first Mayor of the town, serving two additional terms thereafter. Although born in Vermont, it appears his family moved to Canton, New York for some years before his coming into Canada. William's sister Laurene (wife of Linus Joy Munson), was born at Canton; both siblings were married there, and both began their families at Canton as well. William married, firstly, Mercy Wilcox of Canton on 31 May 1820. After her death, he married, secondly, Margaret McKechnie. He is alleged to have had eleven children by each of his wives. During his third term as Mayor, he died at his lakeside home 'The Hill,' and was buried with full Masonic honors. (Note: William is often confused with another William Weller, a son of Asa, whose family resided at Carrying Point, Ontario. However, that William was thirty years older and died earlier than William of Cobourg. The two Weller families not immediately related.) *per Vermont land deed 13 Dec 1859 available online at Cobourg Library website.; **business records are available at the Library & Archives of Canada; Family links:Spouse: Mercy Wilcox Weller (____ - 1843) Children: Lorenzo Reed Weller (1822 - 1901)*36,255,255,255]John Laing Weller (1862 - 1932)*; Burial: Saint Andrew's Presbyterian Cemetery; Cobourg, Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada; Created by: Barbara Haines; Record added: Mar 28, 2014; Find A Grave Memorial# 127048731" http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=127048731&ref=acom

Because of his interest in road improvements he became in 1847 a stockholder in the Cobourg and Port Hope Road Company and president of the Cobourg and Rice Lake Plank Road and Ferry Company. During the 1840s and 1850s Cobourg and Port Hope were competing as ports of outlet for the trade of the townships inland from the lake, with roads and railways as determining factors. As mayor of Cobourg in 1850, 1851, and 1863, and as a town councilor from 1852 to 1855 and again in 1857, Weller was deeply involved in Cobourg’s attempt to establish its supremacy. The town was to accumulate a debt of $800,000 by 1860 in contrast to one of $2,000 in 1845. Council borrowed $12,000 in 1848 to build Victoria Hall, the town hall, purchased in 1850 the Port Hope to Rice Lake Road for $14,400, allotting $6,000 for improvements, purchased the Cobourg Harbour Company for $40,000 and voted $24,000 for its completion, and between 1852 and 1858 bought shares in and made loans to the Cobourg and Peterborough Railway Company in the amount of $671,775. Mayor Boulton and 150 gentlemen tendered Elgin a dinner at the Globe Hotel, and in the course of his reply to an address of welcome he said “There is one gentleman in this room – William Weller – whose only politics is ‘Wheat a dollar a bushel, and a good road to every man’s door’.” As they left the hotel a few minutes later Weller had a moment to express his thanks: “I shall never forget the words of your Excellency”, he said." from "Cobourg 1798 1948, by Edwin C. But I know why you have called upon me - it is to hurt my feelings; for you know I get my living from running stages, and you are taking the "bit" out of my mouth as well as out of my horses' mouths. You are comparing in your minds the present with the past, when you had to "carry" a rail instead of "riding one," in order to help my coaches out of the mud. Cobourg Enterprise. By an advertisement in another column it will be seen that W. Weller, Esq., of this town, has become Managing Proprietor of the Grand Trunk Telegraph Line. Up to the time of the recent change of proprietors, the management seemed to be very defective, the stockholders were extremely dissatisfied, and the public withheld that support from the line which was necessary to keep it in profitable operation. In this disheartening state of the case, our townsman has taken the property into his own hands. He has already made arrangement to connect with the leading lines in the United States and the Lower Provinces, and is now prepared to carry on the business with efficiency and dispatch. Mr. Weller is well known throughout the Province as one of our most energetic business men, and the public may rest assured that in this new enterprise he will allow no opportunity to escape of rending “The International Telegraph Line” the most reliable and best conducted in the country." from The Cobourg Star newspaper archive microfilm, Cobourg Public Library, issue dated Oct 24 1855, copied Jul 2 2016.7

"The meeting for the nomination of candidates for the Mayoralty, held in accordance with the requirements of the Municipal Act, in the Town Hall, at ten o’clock last Monday morning ended in the manner which we, in common with most of our fellow townsmen, anticipated it would. There was, however, a remarkable absence of anything like interest. At ten o’clock when the meeting was opened by David Brodie, Esq., the worthy Town Clerk, scarcely a dozen persons were present. The proceedings were simple enough. Mr. Brodie briefly explained the object of the meeting and his readiness to receive nominations. It was them Moved by Asa A. Burnham, Esq., seconded by Mr. Finlay, That Wm. Weller Esq. be the Mayor of Cobourg, for the year 1863. An hour having elapsed without any other nomination, the Town Clerk declared Mr. Weller to be duly elected Mayor for the ensuing year. Mr. Weller then came forward and briefly returned thanks for the honor conferred on him, and expressed his intentions to discharge the duties of the office faithfully and well. He promised to do his utmost to keep the taxes at as low a figure as was consistent with the maintaining of the honor of the town. The meeting then quietly dissolved. We do not remember ever seeing so much apathy in regard to any public matter as on this occasion, and we must candidly say that we do not think it very creditable to the public spirit of the town. We account for it in part, by the fact that the whole thing was well known to be cut and dried before hand. But this does not wholly account for it, because we see similar frigid indifference manifested as to the composition of our Town Council, which is undoubtedly a much more important matter.
Apropos of this, we may mention that we here that W. I. Stanton, Esq. has been named as a candidate for the South Ward. For the West Ward, Messrs. J. H. Dumble, Jos. Pidgeon, and Wm. Hargraft have been named, and in the east Ward we understand that G. S. Daintry, Esq. is likely to take the place of Mr. Ough, who has expressed a disinclination to sit any longer at the Council table. We believe Messrs. Payne and Densmore will again offer themselves, and we hope that Mr. Sutherland will also allow himself to be re-nominated. We may be able to say something more definite in regard to this important subject next week." from the Cobourg Star newspaper archive microfilm, Cobourg Public Library, issue dated Dec 27 1862.8,24

"Cemetery notes and/or description: Also known as the Old Scotch Kirk Cemetery, it was located next to the first permanent building used by St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, which used the building until 1862. While the plaque at the site indicates that 37 individuals were buried at this cemetery, one individual (Alexander Alcorn) is listed twice - therefore the total number of burials is 36. The current area reserved for the cemetery is too small to hold these many graves and it is believed that many of the original graves are located under a parking lot adjacent to the cemetery." per Findagrave for Mercy Weller - Saint Andrew's Presbyterian Church. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&GRid=35027269&CRid=2283391&3,7,10,9,6

  • Death*: 27 March 1889; Little Rock, Arkansas, U.S.A.; "Accidentaly Killed While Hunting; Special Dispatch to the Globe-Democrat; Little Rock, Ark.: March 27. - between 1 and 2 o'clock this morning Alderman Wilson Weller, W. O. Thomas, proprietor of the Opera House; Charles H. Lewis and R. H. Courney, of the general ticket office of the Little Rock and Memphis Railroad; Chief of Police Frank Botsford and James E. Gibson left this city for Carlisle on a hunting expedition. Shortly after noon to-day information reached Little Rock that Alderman Weller had been accidentally shot and instantly killed. Later information confirmed this report, and the details were as follows: When they had reached a point on the prairie, about five miles from Carlisle, the horses attached to the hack in which they were riding became frightened and made a short turn. In doing so Mr. Courtney was thrown from the vehicle over the hind wheel. His gun stuck the wheel and was discharged. Its entire contents entered the back of Mr. Weller's head, killing him instantly. The deceased has been a resident of Little Rock for the past ten years, coming here and accepting a position as compositor on one of the daily papers of this city. For several years past he has represented the Fourth Ward in the City Council and was a candidate for re-election next Tuesday, and so popular was he with all cleases that he had no opposition. He was about 38 years of age and unmarried. His mother, who lives at Parry Sound, Ont., and his brother, Russell I. Weller, living at Buffalo, N.Y., have been notified of his death." from the scrapbook,]Madelein Muntz Collection, St. Catharines Museum, Oct. 5, 2016, ALC.IV.4, 2006.73.873.

  • Death*: 23 September 1901; Cedar Rapids, Iowa, U.S.A.; "An Old Resident Dead.; After Long Suffering L. R. Weller; Passed Quietly Away; L. R. Weller, aged 79 years died at the home of his son, W. L. Weller, 852 Fifth Avenue, last evening at 8:30 o'clock after an illness of years. The elderly gentleman had a large circle of acquaintances in Cedar Rapids and vicinity, having lived here for the past thirty-five years and though he has been near death's door for some time the announcement of the end will come as a shock to many. It was not until Friday, however, that fears were entertained for his end, for though he has been an invalid for so long he had prospects for many months of life. The sudden change in the weather brought on pneumonia and this combined with old age was more than the patient's frail constitution could stand. Death came in a peaceful, quiet manner. He closed his eyes in sleep and never awoke to know or more suffering or pain. All yesterday afternoon he slumbered and those about him were given hopes that he would master the attack of pneumonia. In the evening, however, he commenced to sink and at 8:30 pm life had departed. Up to the time of the end his mind was clear and active, but he was deprived of much pleasure, which might have come to him in this lonely hours, by having lost the use of his eyes. His sight was affected some years back, but he did not become blind until about twelve months ago. Besides his many friends there remain to mourn his death his wife, three sons and four daughters. The sons are J. H. Weller of Minneapolis and George A. and W. L. of this city. the daughters are Mrs. F. A. Simmons of Minneapolis, Mrs. J. C. McClelland of Worcester, O., Mrs. G. C.? ?Lenterman? of Cedar Rapids and Miss Kate Weller, who makes her home with her brother W. L. Weller. The funeral will be held Thursday, but because of the fact that all of the friends and relatives have not as yet been heard from the final arrangements have not been completed. Lorenzo R. Weller was born in Clinton, N.Y., January 21, 1822. From there he moved to Canada, where he lived for some time, but thirty-five years ago, he brought his family here and has since been a resident. He was at one time connected with the Cereal mill and also the B. C. R. & N. but for years he has not been in active employment." • Note: 18 June 1845; Forester Steamboat, Rice Lake, Canada West; Commander of Forester on Rice Lake: “Cobourg and the Rice Lake.- How very frequently do people travel from home in search of the pleasure derived from change of scene, and at the same time neglect the beauties of their own immediate neighborhood; this remark is applicable to many residing along the front of this District, who have never thought it worth their while even to enquire concerning the great line of Lakes to the northward, the scenery of which fully equals any thing that can be found at a distance. At present every convenience is afforded for a pleasure trip which will well repay you – Mr. Weller starts a six horse coach every morning for the Rice Lake, with an excellent most careful driver, where it meets the Forester steamboat; this boat is under the command of Mr. Weller, Jr., and his attention to his passengers and punctuality in the delivery of freight are earning him not only favour from the public in the shape of praise, but also, we are glad to hear, in a more substantial form.” From the Cobourg Star, June 18 1845, microfilm, Cobourg Public Library.
