- Marriage*: 1941; Ontario; per GEDCOM of Ellie Cameron (ecam@home.com) Sep 9 2014.; Principal=Katherine Jean Booth3
- Death*: 11 September 2003; Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "A true gentleman: a glimpse at the life of Robert Nesbitt by KAI HULSHOF, The Independent; Robert Samuel Nesbitt may have been one of Brighton’s most successful businessmen, but he was first and foremost a family oriented, community-minded gentleman. “ Bob was loved by everyone in the community,” said his wife Jean Nesbitt. “He always said that he would be surprised if anyone showed up to his funeral. Well, you should have seen the church, it was just packed.”
Robert was the only living male carrying the Nesbitt name. His was a name that has figured prominently in Brighton’s history, primarily for its contributions to the business community in the form of Nesbitt Canning Company Ltd. “ It’s the end of an era … he’s the last of his line,” said Jean.
Robert Nesbitt was born on April 26, 1913 to Edwin James Nesbitt and Nellie Foster Jones. He married Katherine Jean Booth in 1941, and the couple had three children - Catherine, Shelaugh and Robert, who passed away at a young age. He was a grandfather to five, and a great-grandfather to three. He died peacefully in hospital on September 11, 2003 of complications after he had broken his hip. Bob was in his ninety-first year.
After graduating from Queen’s University in 1937, Bob spent most of his years with the family company, Nesbitt Canning Co. Ltd. With the advent of cold storage, he gave up the factory and worked for Thompson and Associates for thirty years as a lawyer. Ironically, according to Jean, Bob’s first love was architecture, not business or the law. Bob Nesbitt’s life was marked by his dedication to his family, friends, neighbours, church and community. He dedicated a lifetime of service over the years as a charter member of the Brighton Lions Club, a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, a member of the Brighton Public School Board, the Brighton Chamber of Commerce, the Brighton Suburban Planning Board, United Lodge of Brighton, Presqu’ile Chapter #144, the Trenton Memorial Hospital Board of Directors, and the Ontario Society for Crippled Children.
He was a “wonderful father, and wonderful husband” too, said Jean.
“ He was the most caring man I’ve ever met,” she said. “Always he was a gentleman, always thinking about someone else.” Bob had a strong, loving relationship with Presqu’ile during his entire life. His family always spent their summers at “Idle Haven,” the family’s large summer home on “the Point.” At a very young age Bob developed a love for sailing the waters of Lake Ontario. For generations the family has owned a 52-foot vessel called the “Ramona”, a craft that has sailed all the waters from Presqu’ile to Montreal. “ It was just in his blood. It was in his father’s blood too,” said wife Jean Nesbitt. “We used to sail from the cottage to the Thousand Islands.” Bob Nesbitt was a pillar of his community. He is gone, but his legacy and his spirit live on." per GEDCOM of Ellie Cameron (ecam@home.com) Sep 9 2014.3
