- Note: circa 1917; Smithfield, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Finally, high school. We had a choice of either Brighton or Colborne. There were no buses and very few automobiles, but the CNR had a passenger train timed about right for school opening at 9 a.m. the railroad tickets were sold in books that were good for a month and I believe the price for a book was $3.30. Six or seven of us boarded the train for Colborne at 8 a.m. as we had a longer ride, less waiting at the station, more time for visiting and possibly a little more time for getting into hellery with the station agent. We had quite a long walk from the station to the school, both morning and night, and would not arrive home until 5:15, which made it very good.
I recall one morning when the emergency cord running through the coaches directly to teh engineer was "accidentally pulled." It must been the proper signal, as the train came to a halt. The conductor and brakeman made their tour through the three coaches as there were very few other passengers except for the pupils that boarded at Brighton. There were about twenty of us and suspicion was heavy on our group with a severe calling down and threats of being discharged somewhere between Brighton and Colborne. We were accompanied by a CNR detective the next two or three days, and there was a very severe lecture of the danger and the rules of the railway and also the threat of not being accepted as passengers, and that ended the foolishness." page 27 & 28 of "Brighton Township" by Florence Chatten, article by Frank George of Smithfield.9 - Note: circa 1919; Smithfield, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "The next spring I got a job with a team on the highway, which I continued at for some time, maintenance work mostly.
