Mr. Clench at the commencement of the Revolution joined the Royal Standard as a cadet in the 42nd Regt., and for his conduct in the action which terminated in the capture of General Burgoyne, he obtained a commission in the 8th or King's Regt. and shortly thereafter a Lieutenancy in Butler's Rangers, in which he served until the reduction of the corps in 1783. He was then appointed Clerk of the Peace, under the Government of Quebec, and after the division of the Province, he was continued in that situation.
