  • Anecdote*: after 19 April 1866; Mount Olivet, Northumberland Co., Canada West; Ames Lineage with William "Bill" Goodfellow's comments: James: married … Woof (#1), Nancy Kirk (#2). Issue (#1): Walter (father of Vern, Olley, Kenneth, Lloyd), Minnie (no children). Issue (#2): John (father of Nettie, Cameron), William (father of Mina, Arthur, Bernice, Cecil). Written: Uncle Jim who first married a sister of James Woof (Aubrey's father) lived on farm where John Goodfellow lives, but after his first wife died he sold the farm to Unlce John Goodfellow. His two young children, Walter & Minnie, lived with Great Grandmother Ames (their Grandmother). Later Uncle Jim married Nancy Kirk & bought the farm where Don Cameron lives. I never cared for Uncle Jim. He had a mean streak in him & seemed to like to cause trouble by carrying tales & getting in other people's business.10

There is also a picture of the main barn taken from the same spot looking north. Cows are in front drinking from the large cement water trough, the litter-carrier track is seen at the east side of the barn and the slanted roof and silo are clearly seen on the west side of the barn.

James Ames

M, #801, b. 1808, d. 8 May 1872

  • Birth*: 1808; Upper Canada; Date 1808 per Memorial - age 64 at death May 8 1872. Date 1808 & location Ont. per 1871 Census. Date 1808 & location UC per 1861 Census. Date 1806 & location Cda. per 1851 Census. Date: Militia List of Prince Edward Co. shows age 22 at Jan 1 1829. Location: (1) Census returns: 1851 shows b. Canada; 1861 shows b. Upper Canada; 1871 shows b. Ontario. (2) Son Stephen's 1891 Census Return shows Father b. U.S. (3) Grandson George Henry Ames' (son of David) death registration in Michigan shows David b. New York State. (4) son David Ames in Michigan 1900 Census shows b. NY (5) Son James R. Ames Death Reg'n. shows born USA.
Note: It appears as if the direct census records when James Ames was stll alive shows born in Ontario. Later on, his sons and grandkids show US.
Helen Ames' "Ancestors of James Ames" shows b. about 1808 in U.S.A.; some census returns show born in Canada West.
Note: The general trend here is that early census records showed James Ames was born in Canada and the later records from his children mostly show him born in the US - even showing New York State. I wonder if he may have said Canada when he was alive and recently settled in Brighton Twp. and then the kids knew better and reflected that in their own later records.1,2,3,4,5,6

  • Death*: 8 May 1872; Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Date May 8 1872 per Memorial.
  • Burial*: 10 May 1872; McPhail's Cemetery, Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Memorial: (See Exhibit) In Memory of; Mary; Wife of; James Ames; who died; May 24, 1868; Aged 68 years; & 9 months; Also; James Ames; Who Died; May 8, 1872; Aged 84 years (Age should be 64, not 84??) (The stone is standing on a base with its top 1/4 broken off but not obscuring any text. It is to the right as you enter the cemetery just up the hill a few feet from a tree. The stone is worn but legible with some black moss, mostly near the top. I went to this cemetery many times and did not see this stone although it was very obvious!!!??? Why are James and Mary buried here and not at Mount Olivet, right beside their home? Maybe religious differences - the Methodist church merged?)
CEMSearch shows: James Ames, Born: , Died: 1872-05-06, Age: 64y, Husband of Mary, McPhail's Cemetery, Other names: Mary Ames.
Note: At McPhail's Decoration Day, June 25, 2001, the Cemetery Commission highlighted the James & May Ames grave stone during the ceremony as the first of the old stones to be repaired. They picked this stone because it was in a prominent position, clearly visible to anyone entering the cemetery and because it was in fairly good condition, ensuring a good result. The broken top part had been fastened to the larger section and the base had been straightened. It had been cleaned a bit but more work is to be done to clean it thoroughly and mend the crack with proper colored cement. David Down and some others have taken courses at Campbell's Monuments in Belleville and are slowly learning how to do this work themselves. More stones in the cemetery are to be improved in this same manner.6
  • Note: 1808; "As The Crow Flies" (pg. 80) suggests that James Ames was born near Prescott where his father Boaz died. There is no proof that James is the son of Boaz Ames. Boaz died in 1823 and there is no mention of a 16-year-old son, James, in his Will. This notion seems to have been accepted in the Ames family. Vern Ames, older brother of Lloyd Ames and a teacher, visited the Pioneer Cemetery at Upper Canada Village soon after it was established in the 1950's; he likely saw Boaz Ames' grave stone there.
  • Note: 23 October 1823; Osnabruck Twp., Stormont Co., Eastern District, Upper Canada; Boaz Ames died. James Ames is not mentioned at all in his will ????- which mentioned Boaz's brother Gideon and his daughter Ruth.

  • Residence: circa 1830; Waupoos Island, North Marysburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; The James Ames farm was likely on either of Lots 6, 6S or 7S of Waupoos Island. This is suggested by the map of Waupoos Island on page 40 of The Descendants of W(h)attam: It shows Wattam on Lots 6, 6S and 7S in 1856 (and also in 1878). We know that James Ames traded his Waupoos Island farm for the land in Brighton Twp. in 1850 - the Grantor is listed as William Whattam & wife. These are long narrow lots in the very middle of the island - the S designates the southern section of the lot. The lots have lakeshore on both north and south sides fo the island.
  • Note: after 1830; Waupoos Island, Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; Land Registry Records for Waupoos Island before 1860 are not available at the regular public Land Registry Office at Picton. The label "Indian Lands Dept." is included beside the Patent record for every Lot on Waupoos Island
  • Note: 17 April 1830; Marysburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; Witness at Marriage - Marriage Register: "Robert Webster of the Township of Kingston and Sarah Murray of the township of Marysburgh were married by Banns by me, Marysburgh, this day, 17th April 1830 - Job Deacon. This marriage was celebrated by the Rev. Job Deacon on the date above. In the presence of: Elisha Ames & James Ames. Robert Webster & Sarah H. Murray." From Register 1-A-8, Anglican Church Ontario Diocese Archives, seen on original documents, July 17, 2001.
Note: This is the first time we have seen Elisha Ames and James Ames mentioned together. There are numerous references to Elisha in the area but this shows that they were both in or near Marysburgh in 1830 when James and Mary were married. It remains to determine whether this is our James or if Elisha Ames is James's brother, father or uncle.7

"The men moved overland and the mother and sisters waited until things were ready. The women (Stephen's mother and sisters) came by sailing ship. They were blown out into Lake Ontario for a few days but finally made it into Brighton Bay."
Note: This is also basically the story that Lloyd Ames told regarding the move.
  • Note: 27 April 1850; Waupoos Island, Prince Edward Co., Canada West; James Ames traded his farm in Waupoos Island for the west half of Lot 33 Conc 7 in Brighton Twp. - per Helen (Ames) Goheen, pg. 7 of The Ames Family History (from Marilyn Adams Research Centre, Ameliasburgh, May 9, 2000)
"They traded the Waupoos farm for 200 acres in Orser neighborhood (Mt. Olivet). It had been a land grant in the reign of George III."
Note: The trade with William Whattam included only 100 acres - the west half of Lot 33 Conc 7. Per Land Registry Records James Ames purchased the east half of the lot from Peter Valleau in 1854 (Registration date). Hildebrand Valleau had owned the full 200 acres of Lot 33 and his son Peter sold the west half to William Whattam who transferred it to James Ames in exchange for the Waupoos Island farm.
  • Residence: 27 April 1850; Conc 7 Lot 33, Murray Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West; Land Registry Records (B&S 317) show that William Whattam & wife sold "the same" (100 acres in the west half), Lot 33 Conc 7, Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co. to James Ames. Note: Brighton Twp. was created on January 1, 1852 from the west half of Murray Twp. and the east half of Cramahe Twp. and Presqu'ile Point. Until then, this land was in Murray Twp. (Dan Buchanan, Feb 26 2024)8

  • Note: 1856; North Marysburgh Twp., Waupoos Island, Prince Edward Co., Canada West; William Whattam is shown as occupying all of lot 5, the south part of lot 6 and the south part of lot 7 of Waupoos Island on a cartographic map found at The Library and Archives of Canada, Ottawa, Aug. 30, 2006. The map is dated 1856 and is found on microfiche 12904, R.G. 10M 76703/9, Item 70. The heading is: Plan of Waupoos Island in the county of Prince Edward, Ontario. / Sam M. Benson, P.L.S., Part of: Indian land sales maps.
Note: This map, along with the accompanying records of receipts of land sales show that these lots on Waupoos Island were owned by the Crown until the mid-late 1850's, which means that James Ames would not have owned any land here from 1830 to 1850. He may have had a lease or rental agreement with the Indians or the Crown which may be what we swapped with William Whattam.
