- Note*: circa 1830; Marysburgh Twp., Waupoos Island, Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; Here is an attempt to explain the situation re Waupoos Island, as per my own knowledge and understanding, here in 2020. In 1763, The Royal Proclamation stated that all lands now under the British Crown (after defeating the French) were recognized as belonging to the Indigenous peoiple who had been living there. It required that treaties be struck with Indigenous leaders if and when use of the land was requird by the English. The Mississauga people were identified as owning the land north of Lake Ontario, including Prince Edward County. The English made several treaties with the Mississauga people, ceding tracts of land for settlement. The islands around around Prince Edward County were specifically maintained under the Mississuaga up until 1856 when the Crown made a deal to cede them. During the time of settlement, from the 1780s, individual settlers came to Waupoos Island and paid annual rent payments to the Mississauga people in order to use the land. An annual ceremony was conducted at Vesey Point where the payments were made in the form of food and other goods. The Shannon's and Whattams, as well as James Ames, were among the folks who lived on Waupoos Island during this time. William Whattam had acquired Lot 6 from James Ames in 1850, swapping for land in Murray Township. In 1856, William Whattam and Alexander Shannon received formal receipts giving them ownership of the land, after the Crown acquired the island from the Mississauga. (Dan Buchanan, March 18 2020)5

Note: This transaction is characterized as a trade in Ames family lore. It could be - no dollar amount is indicated in this record. Supposedly the trade was for the Ames land on Waupoos Island where the Whattam family settled.6 - Residence: 27 April 1850; Marysburgh Twp., Waupoos Island, Prince Edward Co., Canada West; James Ames traded his farm in Waupoos Island for the west half of Lot 33 Conc 7 in Brighton Twp. - per Helen (Ames) Goheen, pg. 7 of The Ames Family History (from Marilyn Adams Research Centre, Ameliasburgh, May 9, 2000)
"They traded the Waupoos farm for 200 acres in Orser neighborhood (Mt. Olivet). It had been a land grant in the reign of George III."
Note: The trade with William Whattam included only 100 acres - the west half of Lot 33 Conc 7. Per Land Registry Records James Ames purchased the east half of the lot from Peter Valleau in 1854 (Registration date). Hildebrand Valleau had owned the full 200 acres of Lot 33 and his son Peter sold the west half to William Whattam who transferred it to James Ames in exchange for the Waupoos Island farm. - Residence*: 1856; Lots 5 & 6 & 7, North Marysburgh Twp., Waupoos Island, Prince Edward Co., Canada West; William Whattam is shown as occupying all of lot 5, the south part of lot 6 and the south part of lot 7 of Waupoos Island on a cartographic map found at The Library and Archives of Canada, Ottawa, Aug. 30, 2006. The map is dated 1856 and is found on microfiche 12904, R.G. 10M 76703/9, Item 70. The heading is: Plan of Waupoos Island in the county of Prince Edward, Ontario. / Sam M. Benson, P.L.S., Part of: Indian land sales maps.
Note: This map, along with the accompanying records of receipts of land sales show that these lots on Waupoos Island were owned by the Crown until the mid-late 1850's, which means that James Ames would not have owned any land here from 1830 to 1850. Among these dwellings are two that have particular historic and architectural merit. The Whattam/Wilkinson house is a two-storey red brick house with a 1 ½ storey wing, located in Lot 6. It has several outstanding exterior details. The Settlers Dream dates dwellings with similar architecture to the late 1850's early 1860's. Much of the original detail (e.g. baseboards and mouldings) in the house is intact. The house and its 1880's barn are particularly important for their historical and architectural value, in part due to the fact that both the house and barn remain together in context." taken from a report re designation of Whattam House and Shannon House as heritage properties in 2008 (https://princeedwardcounty.civicweb.net/document/519)
