- Note: 20 July 1867; Brighton, East Northumberland Co., Ontario; Campaign for Election: "TO THE; Independent Electors; Of the; East Riding; Of the; Co. Northumberland; Gentlemen: You will shortly be called upon to send Representatives to the Commons of Canada and the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, to put into operation the constitution of our New Dominion. To prepare for this a large and influential delegation of our citizens having assembled at Warkworth and tendered me unanimous nomination for the Commons, which, at the urgent request of several friends, I have accepted, and am now before you as a candidate at the approaching election.; I trust further party bitterness and sectional hostility will be laid aside and that the just and loyal men of the country will unite their influence to secure the return of such men as will promote the harmonious and successful working of our New Constitution. To make a people loyal they must be justly dealt with, and while I will advocate a vigorous and efficient Government, it shall be my consistent effort to keep the expenditure within the ability of our yet young through prosperous country.; The more general diffusion of intelligence by the reduction of the Letter postage and the abolition of the newspaper postage; the encouragement of Immigration – the fostering of Agriculture and Manufactures – the better efficiency of our admirable Volunteer System --- and the construction of the Murray Canal (now considered a military as well as a commercial necessity) out of the money set apart for that purpose, are some of the measures which, if elected and your representative, shall receive my cordial support. A Government that will thus consult the interests of the people, will not only develop the resources of the country and attract capital to our midst, but render the people Loyal, Prosperous and Happy.; A resident of the Riding, brought up in your midst, and feeling that my interests are identical with yours, I trust to secure the united support of those who approve of the above measures. I shall use my utmost diligence to see most of you in your several localities, where I shall be better able more fully to explain my views on the various subjects that interest us. Hoping to meet you all before the election.; From, Gentlemen,; Your obedient servant,; W. W. J. van Nostrand of the Corps of Guides, Canada, was among the very interesting and interested visitors in town last week-end and was registered at the Clarendon Hotel while here. Colonel van Nostrand is at present visiting his daughter at Richmond Hill and has with him a young granddaughter of French birth, and with whom he plans to return to France to spend the Winter with her parents. Colonel van Nostrand's interest in Brighton dates as far back as 1881, when he was one of a surveying party of fourteen, under the late Major Adam Webb, who surveyed what was then called The Northwest Territories, and blocked the land into 24-mile-square areas, which later were blocked into counties and townships and sections by other surveying parties. Of that old party of fourteen, only three are still living: Mr. Charles Helman of Brighton: Mr. Frank Strong of Colborne and Colonel van Nostrand of Canada and France.
Again in 1883 he was engaged, still under Major Webb, with the party from the Department of Railways and Canals, which surveyed and procured the needed lands for the Murray Canal. The changing and interesting life Colonel van Nostrand has led and his ability to express himself so well, makes him an entertaining conversationalist and we enjoyed his visit to our office immensely."
