  • Note*: circa 1845; Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "Stage coaches required relay stations at intervals of fifteen miles. The earliest known station was opened about 1843 near Salem. It is described as an old fashioned wayside inn and was one of the regular stopping places of the mail coach. That inn was kept by the father of William Mason, a Presqu'ile pioneer who was born in 1834." The Tobey Book, pg. 154.
Note: There are some indications that there were Mason settlers on Presqu'ile at some point, but no specifics are given as to names or when they were there. I suppose Capt. James Mason could have been on Presqu'ile Point for a few years before acquiring the land at Conc 1 Lot 16, Cramahe and operating the inn near salem. However, they only immigrated in 1840, so it would have been a brief time on Presqu'ile. Not clear if the same Mason people are referred to here. (Dan Buchanan, Jan 20 2022)11
