tools. In settling, this knowledge was of great use to him, and he became the builder of the first framed building, first school house, the first Masonic hall, the first brewery, the first wharf (on the bay of Quinte) and the first distillery of Upper Canada. His wife was a sister of Capt. John Bleeker. He settled on the Front of Ernesttown, Lot 6. He kept for years the only tavern between Kingston and York (now Toronto). Finkle's Point (now Village of Bath), township of Ernesttown, was named in his honor. He was the first man in Upper Canada to free his slaves. He owned and operated sailing vessels on the Bay and Lake. After his death, his widow owned shares in the Frontenac, the first steamboat on Lake Ontario. Abbott came to Upper Canada from Massachusetts with his brothers Levi and William before the War of 1812. Levi subsequently returned to the United States, William settled near Ottawa, and George bought lot 7, concession A, Murray Township, near Trenton. He and his wife, Sarah Hennessey, had five children. When George died in 1848 he left his land to his son, Levi Lewis Abbott.
