ITS Date: May 22 1869 (Ontario Land Registry Records from Onland)
Note: This north half of lot 36, Conc 3 is labelled in the 1878 Belden County Atlas Map as "Shearer Est." which means that it had been owned by Lewis Shearer, one of two man who died in The Breakaway on April 21 1852. At the far northwest corner of this lot, the creek crossed his property for a few hundred yards, and that is where he built a saw mill, operating it during the lumbering boom on the 1840s, until it was destroyed by the tsunami of water that rushed down the narrow valley from the west, after the gravel bank broke loose because of so much water due to heavy rain and melting snow. His wife, Sarah Louise (Morrow) passed the land to her children and this list includes some of their children as well as those of Mary Ann (Shearer) Carty, Lewis and Sarah's oldest child. Mary Ann Shearer had married William Carty and lived in Michigan. Levi B. Shearer, the lawyer, was another one of Lewis and Sarah's children.14

  • Residence: circa 1920; 200 Main St., Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Statement of Cultural Heritage Value or Interest: The 'Fife House's' cultural heritage value lies in it being one of Brighton's finest examples of Italianate architecture. It is L-shaped and typical of the style, it features a hipped roof with a prominent overhang and wooden soffrts and paired, decorative brackets. The house was built in 1874 by Dr. Amos E. Fife, who ran his medical practice from there until his death in 1885, when it passed to his wife, Sarah Fife. The Fife House's associative heritage value also rests in the role that Dr. Fife played in Brighton. He was the first President of The Mechanic's Institute that, along with Library Association, was formed in 1869 to replace the earlier Brighton Library Club. Further, in later years the house was the residence of another Brighton general practitioner, Dr. Robert J. Wade; and in still later years it served as a nursing home." from Notice of Intention to Designate, Nov 1 2010, Municipality of Brighton, downloaded from Ontario Heritage Trust (https://www.heritagetrust.on.ca/en/index.php/oha/details/file?id=1165&id=1165)
