Catherine Rutter1,2,3,4
F, #42717, b. 1810, d. 1842
- Father*: George John Rutter b. 1750, d. 21 Sep 1848
- Mother*: Elizabeth Meyers b. c 1765
- Birth*: 1810; Adolphustown Twp., Lennox & Addington Co., Ontario; "Also, I finally figured out where Richard Cole's first wife came from. Catherine Rutter was indeed the daughter of John George Rutter, a Loyalist who came to Canada with my ancestor, Simon Isaac Cole. But he was in the U.S. rather briefly since he was actually from Germany." per email from Lorna Cole, Nov 21 2012. Catherine is 1st wife of Richard Cole per marriage register of son George Cole. Date 1810 & location Adolphustown per GEDCOM of Richard Lander, Nov 21 2012.
Note: This is an exceptional family. Catherine, born in 1810, is said to be the "second youngest of 12"; and George Rutter did not get married until he was 35. Both he and Elizabeth (Meyers), his wife, would be 60 years of age when Catherine was born. The Land Petition says she is a daughter of George Rutter. It looks like this is correct although I would like to see who the other kids were - I have 7 of the 12 only. (Dan Buchanan, Sep 2 2014)2,3,4,5,6 - Marriage*: before 1831; Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; "Richard married Catherine Rutter (either Scottish or English, I am not sure) just before he left Prince Edward County and together they came to Northumberland County. She had three children and then died at age 32. Richard married Henrietta Wright in 1844 and proceeded to have many children together." per email from Lorna Cole, Nov 19 2012. Richard's first wife is named Catherine per marriage register of their son George Cole.; Principal=Richard Cole2,3,5
- Death*: 1842; Murray Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Date 1842 per GEDCOM of Richard Lander, Nov 21 2012. Richard Cole married again 1844. There is a female over 16 in the 1841 Census.
Note: "Richard married Catherine Rutter (either Scottish or English, I am not sure) just before he left Prince Edward County and together they came to Northumberland County. She had three children and then died at age 32. Richard married Henritta Wright in 1844 and proceeded to have many children together." per email from Lorna Cole, Nov 19 2012.3,6,5
- Married Name: before 1831; Cole2
- Residence*: 7 January 1835; Murray Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; "The Petition of Catherine Cole wife of Richard Cole of the Township of Murray in the Newcastle District, Provinces of Upper Canada, humbly sheweth that your Petitioner is the daughter of George Rutter of the Township of Adolphustown in the Midland District, a U. E. Loyalist. That your Petitioner has attained the age of twenty-one and has never received any Land or order for Land from the Crown. Your Petitioner therefore prays that your Excellency will be pleased to grant until her two hundred acres of the waste Lands of the Crown, and permit …,,, to be her Agent to locate the same, and to receive the Patent when completed. And as duty bound will ever pray. Prince Edward District …. Catherine Cole To Wit. Maketh oath and saith that she is the person she describes herself to be in the foregoing Petition: that she has attained the age of twenty-one years, and has not heretofore received any Land or order for Land from the Crown. Sworn in open Sessions before me this 7 day of January 1835;
D. Fairfield, Clerk of the Peace; Catherine Cole; Dated at the Court House in Picton in the said District, this seventh day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty five
?Dar Fairfield, Clerk of the Peace; L. Washburn, Chairman" (Reference: Upper Canada Land Petitions “C” Bundle 18, 1828-1835 (RG 1, I 3, Vol. 116)" copied this from ancestry.com, Lorna Cole, info, Sep 2 2014.4 - Residence: 5 February 1835; Murray Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; O.C. Date: Feb 5 1835: "A member of the Quinte Branch has her own copies of the ‘Beacon’ and forwarded to following summary: “The article is on the story of John George Rutter, UEL, from Holland, to the States, through the war & coming to Canada with Peter Vanalstine. The children of John George & his wife, Elizabeth ?, are listed with Catherine the second youngest of 12 & married to Richard Cole, farmer. That is the only mention of these two - no further dates or information. Some further information on some of the other children.” This is similar to the information in ‘The Loyalist List’ publication, which has (in brief):
John George Rutter m. Elizabeth… died. 21 Sept 1848, Adolphustown, aged 98
Catherine is the second youngest in the list of children. She married Richard Cole of Murray. O.C. 5 Feb 1835" per email from Lorna Cole, Sep 2 2014.5 - Note*: circa 1840; Adolphustown Twp., Lennox & Addington Co., Ontario; "Catherine Rutter (1810-1844) was Richard Cole’s first wife. She was born 1810 in Adolphustown, Lennox & Addington Co., Ontario, Canada. Catherine was the daughter of John George Rutter who was born Apr 1750 in Eßlingen, Esslingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany and Elizabeth Meyers who was born 1764 in Hay Bay, Ontario, Canada. Her father, John first landed at Philadelphia about 1766. He fought on the British side in the American Revolution. He left from New York for Canada on 8 Sept 1783 in a fleet of 7 ships under the command of Captain VanAlstine and arrived in Quebec on 8 Oct. The settlers landed around Quinte Bay where each received a lot of 400 acres. John was given Crown land in what became Adolphustown. John was obviously known as George, as he is listed under that name in the new township records eg. March 1794 he is recorded in the records as George & having 7 members in his family. See "Settlement of Upper Canada" by Wm Canniff 1869 pp448 - 458. This is online at http://my.tbaytel.net/bmartin/setlment.htm; According to "Notes on Adolphustown" by TW Casey, George was a hatter by trade and his son, John, succeeded him in this occupation. The following is a list of Catherine Rutter’s ten siblings, all of whom were born in Aldolphustown, Lennox & Addington Co., Ontario. Unfortunately, I do not have much information about these siblings: Michael Rutter 1786 – 1871; John Rutter 1791 – 1866; Mary Rutter 1791 – ;
Allida Meyers Rutter 1793 – ; Alexander VanAlstine Rutter 1794 – 1878; Elizabeth Rutter 1796 – ; Peter Rutter 1797 – 1861
Amelia Rutter 1816 – ; George Rutter 1816 – 1894; Lavinia Rutter 1818 – " from family tree of lornacole on ancestry.com, Sep 1 2014.4
