  • Note: 1904; Prequ'ile Point, Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; “Hotelier Peter Covell – Peter Covell was born in Brighton in the year 1856 and was a resident all his life. For twenty years he was in the apple business and was one of the group of growers and exporters who made Brighton notable as the centre of one of the best apple districts. Peter was also involved in the export of pears, plums and fish. At one time he was the Customs Officer here, holding the position for ten years, and he served two years as a member of the local school board. Peter Covell could well be called one of the pioneers of Presqu’ile, for in 1904 he built Presqu’ile Hotel. Peter was the owner and manager of the hotel until 1914 when he sold it to the Presqu’ile Summer Hotel Company. Peter’s wife, Helena Covell, nee Shewman, was also actively involved in the operation of the new hotel.” The Brighton Ensign, August 13, 1897, quoted in “Presqu’ile” by Susan Brose and Bonnie Browne, 1994, pg. 3513

Lewis Shearer1

M, #40168, b. 1807, d. 21 April 1852

  • Birth*: 1807; New York, U.S.A.; Date 1807 per Burial. Date 1807 & location US per 1851 Census. Location NY per 1880 Census of son Levi Shearer.1,2,3

    per 1851 Census.; Principal=Sarah Louise Morrow1,4
  • Death*: 21 April 1852; Brighton Twp., Hilton, Northumberland Co., Canada West; Lewis Shearer died, along with Jacob Herrington, in "The Breakaway", when the gravel bank on the north side of Little Lake, just north of Hilton, gave way, sending a tsunami of water cascading down the narrow creek bed. Lewis Shearer's saw mill was destroyed and the two men were killed in the area where the valley widens at the east end of the campgrounds on the east side of No. 30 Highway in the valley. A second mill, owned by William Simpson, was damaged a mile down the creek to the north east but no fatalities occurred there. The water continued on to Cole Creek (Cold Creek now) and emptied into the Trent River the next day. This is a well-known story in the area. My parents participated in plays at church and school gatherings which recounted the drama of this important event in the history of the community. My grandfather, Lloyd Ames, like to tell the tale as we were driving through the valley on the way to Brighton when I was a kid. (Dan Buchanan, Feb 16, 2005)

Note: The date of the 1851 Census is not written on any of the pages but in Brighton Twp., is generally shown to be taken during 1852. Remember that Brighton Twp. was created January 1 1852 so the census will not be before that. Also, we know The Breakaway happened April 21 1852 and we also know Lewis Shearer died in the disaster- his memorial makes that plain. So the 1851 Census must have been taken in this area between January 1 and April 21 1852 - in order record Lewis Shearer. The second man thought to have died in the disaster was Jacob Herrington - who is also in the 1851 Census.)1

At the far northwest corner of this lot, the creek crossed his property for a few hundred yards, and that is where he built a saw mill, operating it during the lumbering boom on the 1840s, until it was destroyed by the tsunami of water that rushed down the narrow valley from the west, after the gravel bank broke loose because of so much water due to heavy rain and melting snow.
