It was held on Thursday August 31 near the west end of the route, on the farm of William Lovatt which had been appropriated for the canal right of way. ... The ceremonies began at 1:30 when Thomas Webb, the Reeve of Brighton Township and Chairman of the Canal Celebration Committee welcomed the crowd and then presented a ceremonial silver spade to Mrs. Joseph Keeler to be used in the turning of the first sod. Joseph Keeler, the M.P. for Northumberland East had died in January 1881, but had been the leading advocate of the Murray Canal during his time in Parliament. In recognition of his important work, Octavia Keeler was given the honour of opening the works. After a short speech in which she described the canal as "a grand monument to my dear husband's memory", she placed a spade full of earth in one of Silcox's earth scrapers, which were waiting nearby in readiness to begin the work.
