  • Note*: 1809; Upper Canada; "In 1809 an Indian courier provided monthly mail service from Kingston to York. Colonel Bleecker had much to do with these couriers. There was also one white man who did courier work. He was Andres Johnson. He commenced carrying mail for a private employer about the same time as the Indian courier worked and travelled from Kingston to York. His route included Adolphustown, Picton, Wellington, The Carrying Place, and thence across the lakshore fording streams as best he could, often on a fallen tree or by swimming. He would spend 5 hours in York and then start back. These trips were generally made wiithin a fortnight. One notes that his route is very much the same as the later stage route." from The Tobey Book, pg. 50
    Note: Not sure if this is the right Andrew Johnson, but it would be the right time and place.4
