"Shortly after the opening of the century just closed, Josiah Proctor, with his wife and family, crossed over from their native state of Vermont, to the Bay district. Some years prior to starting for Canada, the Pioneer had married Susannah Chamberlain of Vermont, and at the time of departure had a family of four children." from page 626 of "Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte", Oct 6, 2004.

  • Census: 1790; Vermont, U.S.A.; There is no Josiah Proctor listed in the 1790 Census - per search index. There are three Proctor's in Vermont, Cavendish, Windsor Co. - Isaac, Leonard and Timothy.5
  • Census: 1800; Waterbury, Crittenden Co., Vermont, U.S.A.; 1800 Census: Josiah Proctor; 2 males under 10; 1 male 26 to 45;; - ; 1 female 10 to 16; 1 female 16 to 26 (ancestry.com)5
  • Immigration*: 1810; Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; "The first winter after their arrival in Upper Canada, was spent in the township of Cramahe, and Josiah Proctor, the pioneer, felled the first tree in the present site of the village of Colborne, where he remained until spring. He then removed to Lot 2, north and south, concession 2, on part of the which property of four hundred acres, the present village of Brighton is situated." pg. 626, "Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte", Oct. 6, 2004.3
  • Note*: 1810; Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; The Tobey Book provides incorrect information when it states on page 16: "In this same year (1796 when Obediah Simpson settled just to the west on Conc 2 Lot 4) Josiah Proctor settled on Lot 2 of Concession 2 in a house on what are now known as Village Lots 5 and 6 north of Main Street between Victoria and Railroad Streets." In fact, Josiah Proctor came to this area in 1810 and is shown in Cramahe Twp. census records from 1810. He would purchase Conc 2 Lot 2 in 1814 from David M. Rogers.6

  • Residence: 1814; Land where Brighton would be, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "The Tobey Book, pg. 47, shows "We have now recorded eight families whose land was officially registered. Undoubtedly there were a few who were squatters living on land marked by themselves and not by a surveyor. Therefore these people are not mentioned in the Ontario Registry."
Note: An example of "squatters" would be Alexander Chisholm who built mills on the creek where Spring Valley is now. He came in expecting to get the Crown Reserve granted to him but his wife Nancy and step-son John Singleton did not own the land until the 1820's.6
  • Residence*: 23 May 1814; Conc 2 Lot 2, Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Land Registry Records (B&S 399) show that Josiah Proctor purchased all 200 acres of Lot 2, Conc 2, from David M. Rogers, ITS Date: May 23rd, 1814, Reg. Date: July 11, 1814
Note: The record is located with Brighton Twp. although before Jaqn 1 1852 this was Cramahe Twp. since it is on the west side of Prince Edward Street which is the old boundary between Cramahe and Murray Townships.
Note: The Proctors are said to have been in this area from 1810 so they could have been living here and arranged the purchase four years later.7

The first, on lot 6, concession 2, Brighton Township was an old two-storey frame inn owned by John Proctor's father, Isaac. Like Hodge's hotel in town, it was built shortly after the York-Kingston Road was completed. John's grandfather, Josiah, may even have operated the inn at one time, for in 1819 he had an innkeeper's licence and was fined 10 pounds for an infraction of the regulations governing taverns. Josiah was a local figure of note, remembered both for great strength and great size - in his later years he is said to hav weighed nearly five hundred pounds." from "Homesteads: Early buildings and families from Kingston to Toronto" by Margaret McBurley and Mary Byers, 1979, pg. 1428
