  • Note*: 21 April 1852; The Breakaway, Hilton, Northumberland Co., Canada West; On April 21, 1852, several days of heavy rain along with spring snowmelt caused a gravel bank to give way on the small lake north-west of Hilton. The water cascaded down the narrow valley, following the creek to the north-east, all the way to Cole Creek and eventually the Trent River. Lewis Shearer's saw mill in the valley north of Hilton was destroyed, killing Mr. Shearer and a helper, Jacob Herrington. This event is known in local parlance as "The Breakaway". The Stephens brothers, Alva and Daniel, had recently obtained parts of the south half of lot 5 from their father Richard, so, all of a sudden, their lake was gone. They sold to John Philp soon after. Abel Fennell had purchased property top the south of the west part of the lake in 1845 and would add land again in 1853, purchasing from the Richmond brothers. (Dan Buchanan, July 14 2021)

Source: Gladys Heath, from page 47 of "Brighton Township" by Florence Chatten, 2009.
Note: Unable to find a William Fennell in this family, futher research revealed that Richard William Fennell was a son of Nehemiah James Fennell who owned the property at the south west corner of Hilton Lake. Most records use the name Richard Fennell and not William although some show Richard W. This would be the William Fennell who saw that his lake was gone. He would have been about 16 at that time.
