- Immigration*: circa 1820; Upper Canada; "Source: Beth Tulac- I have been researching this family for many years. Sylvia was my g-grandmother through her 2nd marriage in Michigan to William Brock who was also from the Brighton, Ontario area. She was born 14 Oct. 1838 in Rochester, Monroe County, NY, the first child of John and Jane (Montgomery) Mannay (later spelled Manney). Jane's parents were Hugh and Rebecca (Van Wicklen) Montgomery who moved from NY to Northumberland County, Ontario about 1824. The Mannay family moved from NY to Brighton, Ont. about 1845, then to Victoria County before 1860. Sylvia married W.H. Kemp 13 July 1858. Her parents moved first to Charlevoix county, MI before 1870 and Sylvia moved there before 1873 ?2nd marriage to William Brock, born 1833 in Murray Twp, Ont., was not recorded in Charlevoix County but their first child was born June 1873. Sylvia died 22 Sept 1882 after giving birth to their 5th child. Pat Cully's connection is also through the Mannay's - her g-grandmother Rebecca was a sister of Sylvia. They both married in Ontario and later left husbands there and remarried Brock brothers here in MI. After Sylvia died in 1882, all of the Mannay's and spouses moved for Washington and Oregon." per GEDCOM of Cheryl (Kemp) Taber, June 12 2012.

Note: George Montgomery is probably the fellow who was caught in The Breakaway on April 21, 1852, and was almost killed. He had been working at the Simpson Mill. In the 1851 Census he is shown a couple of families below John W. Simpson who would have been the mill owner on Conc 4, Lot 34.2 - Note: 21 April 1852; The Breakaway, Hilton, Northumberland Co., Canada West; On April 21, 1852, several days of heavy rain along with spring snowmelt caused a gravel bank to give way on the small lake north-west of Hilton. The water cascaded down the narrow valley, following the creek to the north-east, all the way to Cole Creek and eventually the Trent River. Lewis Shearer's saw mill in the valley north of Hilton was destroyed, killing Mr. Shearer and a helper, Jacob Herrington. This event is known in local parlance as "The Breakaway". The Stephens brothers, Alva and Daniel, had recently obtained parts of the south half of lot 5 from their father Richard, so, all of a sudden, their lake was gone. They sold to John Philp soon after. (Dan Buchanan, July 14 2021)
- Note: 21 April 1852; Brighton Twp., Hilton, Northumberland Co., Canada West; "Those working at the Simpson mill, further east, were more fortunate. George Montgomery must have had some warning, as he was discovered clinging to part of the building that escaped destruction and was rescued. However, Montgomery's hearing was seriously impaired for the rest of his life as a result of his breakaway ordeal."
