  • Death*: circa 1880; South Fredericksburgh Twp., Lennox & Addington Co., Ontario; "OBITUARY - BYARD DETLOR, ESQ. - By the death of Mr. Byard Detlor, the township of South Fredericksburgh has lost one of its oldest and most respected sons. He was born in that township in 1816, and was consequently nearly eighty-three years of age at the time of his death. He lived all his life time in that township and was an excellent type of its excellent and intelligent farmers. Up to the last he retained his physical and intellectual strength to a remarkable degree and was only a couple of days sick - of a paraletic stroke. Mr. Detlor was of U.E. Loyalist descent. His grandfather, Valentine Detlor, came to this province with the Loyalist refugees in 1784 and settled in the township and not far from the locality where some of the fifth generation of the same family now reside. He was a soldier of the King's Loyal Regiment of New York during the American revolution and was on the official government provision list in 1786. The land first granted to him by the Government was, according to the Crown lands record, sold to Cyrenus Parks. Jacob Detlor, his son, was the father of the subject of this notice and was also a life-long resident of the same township. Mr. Byard Detlor married Miss Martha Ham, a daughter of Mr. John Ham, one of the early prominent residents of Fredericksburgh, who survives him with six of their children. The sons living are George, Jacob and Perry, all residents of South Fredericksburgh, and Delew, in Minnesota. Another, son, Byard, was for some years a promising young resident of Napanee and died not long ago, after a very successful business career in Iowa. The daughters are Rebecca, wife of Charles Hawley, Esq., of Hawley, and Josephene, wife of C.R. Mallory near Cobourg. The deceased was an active and consistent member of the Methodist church, and a man of very exemplary and consistent life. In politics he was a conservative, but he never took a very active interest in political affairs." per GEDCOM of Richard Lander, Jan 15, 2006.2

Cornelius Dingman1

M, #28478, b. November 1807, d. 5 June 1902
  • Birth*: November 1807; Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; Cornelius fits better with the family of Samuel and Mary Dingman; Richard is in Barton in 1842, married in Ancaster in 1832; Cornelius is married in Ancaster in 1835 - more things seem right.
Date Nov 1807 per IGI Record & email from Michael Dingman, Nov 14, 2003.
Michael Dingman believes Cornelius is the son of John and Catherine Dingman of Prince Edward County. It is possible so I place him here tentatively - more research is needed to confirm this.1,2
  • Marriage*: 15 December 1835; Ancaster Twp., Wentworth Co., Ontario; Date Dec 15 1835 & loction Hamilton per IGI Record. Location Ancaster per email from Michael Dingman, Nov 14, 2003.
Mary Monteith could be the sister of Robert Monteith who we see in Ancaster Twp. in the 1842 Assessment, showing that he had been in the Province for 8 years, placing immigration from Ireland in 1834.; Principal=Mary Monteith2,1
  • Marriage*: before 1851; Gore of Downie, Perth Co., Ontario; Eliza is Cornelius' wife in 1851 Census. Location Gore of Downie per web site of Michael Dingman, Nov 15, 2003. "Your research on Samuel Francis Dingman who married Lovina Greenhoe is in error, he did not have a son Eric and William. This is my gg-grandfather, the first son of Cornelius Dingman and his wife Elizabeth "Eliza" Sparrow Dunsmore." per email from Michael Dingman, Nov 14, 2003.; Principal=Elizabeth "Eliza" Sparow2
  • Death*: 5 June 1902; Wales Twp., St. Clair Co., Michigan, U.S.A.; "Registger of Death; No. 17; Date of Death: June 5, 1902; Full Name: Cornelius Dingman; Residence: - ; Sex: Male; Color: White; Age: 96 yrs.; Date of Birth: Status: widower; Birthplace: - ; Occupation: farmer; Father's Name: John Dingman; Birthplace: Penn.; Mother's Name: Catherine Dingman; Birthplace: Penn.; Cause of Death: old age; Dr.: J. H. Chester; Burial: Wales West Cemetery; Undertaker: Otto Kress; Permit Granted: June 5, 1902" sent to me via email from Michael Dingman, Nov 29, 2003
Note: Age 96 would make birth date 1806. Names and birth place of parents is not supported by any document other than this one - is it a mistake???
Date Jun 5 1902 per IGI Record & email from Michael Dingman, Nov 14, 2003.1,2
  • Burial*: 7 June 1902; Lambs Cemetery, Wales Twp., St. Clair Co., Michigan, U.S.A.; per web site of Michael Dingman, Nov 15, 2003.
  • Note: circa 1808; Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; Cornelius Dingman could have been named after Peter Cornelius who married Samuel's youngest sister, Peggy, in 1808. It is a very distinctive name and probably came directly from a surname. This is one of the key elements that causes me to believe Cornelius may be a son of Samuel and Maria Dingman.
  • Note*: 1828; Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "Cornelius DINGMAN (my ggg -grandfather, born c1807 to John and Catherine) No age given 2nd Regiment Northumberland Militia, 6th Percy Company Private" Page 168 of Men of Upper Canada Militia Rolls 1828-1829 By Ontario Genealogy Society 1995 - sent by Michael Dingman, Oct 11, 2003.2
  • Residence: 30 September 1839; Conc 6 Lot 5, Gore of Downie, Perth Co., Ontario; "Because the Monteith family migrated to the Stratford area in the 1830s, it is possible that was where Cornelius met Mary and they traveled to Hamilton area to get married. They were living in a log cabin on 100 acres at lot 5, concession 6 of the Gore of Downie,
Perth County from at least September 30, 1839 to July 27, 1853 ." from email sent by Richard Dingman, Dec 7, 2003.

Note: This is from the URL http://www.huroncounty.ca/library/assess/down1842.htm
Note: Downie was part of "The Huron Tract" and was in Huron District until Perth County was formed in 1853.
Note: The numbers for children under 16 is wrong here. Cornelius Dingman had four girls and no boys at this time - not 4 boys. This would appear to be a transcription error?
  • Census: 1851; Gore of Downie, Perth Co., Ontario; Age 41 at 1851 Census: Dingman, Cornelius, 41, b. Cda., Lab., Episc., married; Eliza, 32, b. Irel., married; John, 10, b. Cda.; Dunsmore, Ephraim, 7; Thos., 5; Joseph, 4 (Conc 4, Lot 5, 15 acres)
Note: the surname with Ephraim, Thomas and Joseph is very clearly shown as Dunsmore? Are these children from her earlier marriage to James Dunsmore - and not children of Cornelius?
Cornelius Dingman is in Gore of Downie at 1851 Census per web site of Michael Dingman, Nov 15, 2003.3
